3. Explanation of This Old Photograph
This old photograph is a postcard believed to have been taken between the late Taisho and early Showa periods.
At the time the photograph was taken, the ‘Honmaru’ (Main Bailey) Garden was being used as a sports field for the former ‘Matsumoto Junior High School.’
Also visible on the site of the ‘Ninomaru Goten’ (Second Bailey Palace) ruins is the ‘Matsumoto Branch Court of Nagano District Court,’ which has been relocated to the ‘Matsumoto City Court and Historical Village’ and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
On the left side of the photograph, you can see the 'Former Matsumoto Catholic church priest house' before it was relocated next to the 'Former Kaichi School Building.'
Currently, in this direction, you can see the ‘Honmaru’ Garden in the foreground, the ‘Ninomaru Goten’ ruins across the inner moat, and the Matsumoto City Hall across the outer moat.
Beyond that, there are offices, shops, and residential areas, and at the foot of the mountain, you can see the spa town of ’Utsukushigahara Onsen (Spa),' which was formerly known as 'Yamabe no Yu' and 'Shiraito no Yu.'
