3. Explanation of This Old Photograph
The building in the center and the group of wooden structures to its left are the former ‘Matsumoto Junior High School,’ located in the ‘Ninomaru’ (Second Bailey).
Based on the records of its expansion and renovation, it has been determined that this old photograph was taken in the late 1880s.
In the upper right of the photo, you can see the former ‘Kaichi School’ building, which was the first to be designated as a National Treasure in the Reiwa era.
Before relocating to its current location, it was situated at this spot on the south bank of the ‘Metoba’ River.
At the top center of the photo, you can see ‘Honmachi Street,’ and if you zoom in, you can observe people bustling about.
In front of ‘Honmachi Street’ is the location where the ‘Otemon’ Gate once stood, and a police station and post office were newly constructed there.
The bell tower visible in the circle labeled Police Station in the image belongs to ‘Honganji Matsumoto Betsuin’ (temple), and these facilities were built after the surrounding area was destroyed by a great fire in 1888.
In modern photographs, office buildings and apartments stand in this area, making it hard to believe it is the same place as in the past.
However, the restoration project of the Southern Outer Moat is underway within the castle grounds, and eventually, its water-filled appearance will be revived.
